The Heart is the 1st point of reference

Are you aware of, or know people who pretty consistently say “I have to think about it”, or “I don’t know”. Do you know why they say those things? I know why…because they haven’t checked in with what their heart has to say about it.

The heart is an amazing mechanism not only for the physical body mechanics but also emotionally. Sadly most of us are in our heads so much we miss what we really want and desire. Thus the reason why “I don’t know” comes up so much.

Great, so what is really happening?

According to the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, “Our brain is continuously processing signals… This input is then transmitted to the brain… In the brain, signals are received in categories. Thus the processing of sensory input begins with specific regions in the brain separately deciphering each message. Subsequently, multiple types of sensory input are integrated, thus allowing the mass of information to be interpreted into an appropriate (motor) response.”

In everyday language: Transmissions (like those from the Heart) go to the brain, then the brain takes action.
However, people are doing their best to rework this dynamic.

Why?
1. Not want to answer the question
2. Not want to hurt someone’s feelings with what they really feel and thus give a middle of the road, non-committed answer
and/or
3. Don’t want to or have forgotten how to check in with themselves and how they feel, (perhaps it is because they have been people pleasing for years and have lost that part of them along the way).

How to Remedy and check back in with the Heart to restart this correct pathway?
It’s all about getting out of your head and into your heart.

Right now put your hand on your heart. Do you feel it beat? Take a deep breath in for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, breathe out for 4 counts. How does your heart feel now? Did it feel tight, expanded, erratic, full, calm? Make a note of any thoughts, feelings, emotions that come up around this.

You can also get out of your head and back into your heart through meditation. There are many traditions and ways to meditate but it really doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply sitting in a quite area, either sitting on the floor with your legs crossed or sitting in a chair with feet flat on the floor both with a straight spine. Hands in your lap, or on your knees. Now breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, breathe out for 4 counts. Do this starting out for 5-10 minutes. If any thoughts come to your mind simply push them aside and focus again on the breath. Do this daily. You will get better at quieting the mind with meditation repetition and thus allowing a deeper connection to be made with the heart and what you feel vs what you think.

Now next time you have a question come up and you want to say “I don’t know” or “I have to think about it” take a moment to do your 4 count breathing, check in with the heart and answer from that space. What you feel vs what you think.
